Introduction
Microsoft has announced the availability of the Microsoft 365 E7 license, a new offer called Frontier Suite, designed for the era of AI-driven work and agents. This announcement is part of a series of innovations surrounding Microsoft 365 Copilot, Agent 365, and a new transformation model that Microsoft calls Frontier Transformation.
The goal is clear : to enable businesses to leverage AI at scale while maintaining a high level of security, governance, and trust.
The era of agent-based work
Microsoft believes that AI is rapidly evolving toward a model where intelligent agents work alongside humans. These agents can automate tasks, analyze data, generate content, and even execute business workflows.
According to projections cited by Microsoft, more than one billion agents could exist by 2028, and many companies are already using agents for functions such as research, development, customer support, and human resources.
But this explosion of agents poses new challenges :
- Agent governance
- Security and compliance
- Visibility into their actions
- Management at scale
This is precisely what Microsoft is seeking to address with Agent 365 and the new Microsoft 365 E7 suite.
Microsoft 365 E7 : A unified suite for enterprise AI
Microsoft 365 E7 is presented as the productivity suite for a human-led, agent-operated enterprise : the human expresses the intent, the agent executes, and the whole system remains secure, observable, and governed.
The suite includes, in the same SKU :
- Microsoft 365 E5 (productivity and security foundation)
- Microsoft 365 Copilot (AI in workflow)
- Microsoft Entra Suite (identity, access, and controls)
- Agent 365 (control plane for governing and scaling agents)
- Advanced security solutions such as Defender, Intune, and Purview

This combination brings together productivity, AI, identity, security, and compliance in a single platform.
According to Microsoft, businesses no longer want to assemble disparate AI and security solutions. They want an integrated platform capable of managing both employees and AI agents.
Microsoft 365 E7 addresses this demand by offering an architecture where users and agents are managed with the same security and governance policies.
Agent 365 : The control plan for AI agents
A central element of this strategy is Agent 365, presented as a control plan for AI agents.
Agent 365 allows IT and security teams to :
- Monitor agents deployed within the organization
- Enforce security policies
- Manage identities and access
- Analyze agent behavior and performance
This makes it possible to govern agents as digital identities, just like users.
Microsoft indicates that tens of millions of agents have already appeared in the Agent 365 registry during the preview phases.
Work IQ : The contextual intelligence behind copilot
The Frontier Suite also relies on a layer called Work IQ.
This technology analyzes signals from Microsoft 365 :
- Outlook emails
- Teams conversations
- SharePoint documents
- OneDrive files
It creates a semantic graph of work, linking people, projects, documents, and processes to provide precise context to agents and Copilot.
Thanks to this contextual intelligence, agents can :
- Understand the user’s intent
- Suggest relevant actions
- Automate complex tasks
Microsoft 365 Copilot : A new wave of innovation
The announcement of the Frontier Suite is also accompanied by Wave 3 of Microsoft 365 Copilot.
This new version introduces several important innovations :
- Copilot Cowork, an agent capable of performing long and multi-step tasks
- A multi-model environment using various AI technologies, including those from OpenAI and Anthropic
- Deeper integration with Microsoft 365 applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
The goal is to transform Copilot into a true agent-based productivity engine, capable of executing complete workflows.
A strategy based on « Intelligence + Trust »
Microsoft summarizes its vision with two key concepts :
-
Intelligence: Using the most advanced AI models to augment human capabilities.
-
Trust: Ensuring security, compliance, and governance in an environment where humans and agents work together.
This combination is at the heart of Frontier Transformation, an approach that aims to transform organizations through AI while maintaining strict control over data and systems.
Who does E7 make sense for ?
E7 primarily targets three types of organization:
- Those that already have Copilot and want to industrialize agents (beyond prompting).
- Those that need to govern agentic (security, compliance, identity) before allowing AI to act on processes.
- Those that want to standardize (rather than assemble add-ons) and benefit from a complete intelligence + trust framework.
Availability and pricing
Microsoft has announced :
| License | Price | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 E7 – Frontier Suite | 99$ per month | General availability on May 1, 2026 |
| Agent 365 | 15$ per month | General availability on May 1, 2026 |
And most importantly : the Microsoft 365 E7 license is designed as an integrated suite (E5 + Copilot + Entra Suite + Agent 365). Microsoft even mentions a saving when the whole package is purchased as a suite rather than by assembling the components separately.
Conclusion
With Microsoft 365 E7, Microsoft takes another step in its enterprise artificial intelligence strategy. The Frontier Suite doesn’t just add new AI capabilities; it offers a complete platform for managing a hybrid workforce composed of humans and intelligent agents.
By combining Copilot, Agent 365, Work IQ, and Microsoft security tools, the company aims to empower organizations to fully leverage AI while maintaining a high level of trust and control.
For Microsoft, the future of work will not only be assisted by AI; it will be co-piloted by intelligent agents integrated into the heart of business processes.
