Claude Opus 5 available in Microsoft Foundry

Introduction
Claude Opus 5 has been available in Microsoft Foundry since July 24, 2026, simultaneously with its general release by Anthropic. For the first time, a Claude model arrives in Foundry on launch day, with two hosting options : on the Anthropic infrastructure or on the Azure infrastructure, each offering a distinct data residency profile.

Deployment and regions
The model is accessible from the Foundry portal catalog (ai.azure.com) : section Discover > Models > search claude-opus-5. The default deployment identifier is claude-opus-5. The context window is 1 million tokens, with a maximum output of 128,000 tokens. Acceptance of the Azure Marketplace terms is required on first deployment.
Two versions coexist under the same identifier :
- Version 1 — Hosted on Anthropic : Inference runs on the Anthropic infrastructure. Available in Global Standard in the East US 2 and Sweden Central regions.
- Version 2 — Hosted on Azure : Prompts and responses remain within the Azure infrastructure. Available in Global Standard in several US regions and Sweden Central, and in Data Zone Standard US in US regions. Advanced agentic features (tool use server-side, structured outputs, MCP, Files API) are not available in this version.
CCU billing
Claude in Foundry is billed through Claude Consumption Units (CCU). One CCU equals 0.01$. The Opus 5 rate is identical to the direct Anthropic API : 5$ / 1M input tokens and 25$ / 1M output tokens, or 500 CCU per 1M input tokens and 2,500 CCU per 1M output tokens. Billing is postpaid only, with no prepaid credit option. Claude spending counts toward an existing Microsoft Azure Consumption Commitment (MACC) and is visible in Azure Cost Management.

Enterprise features and data residency
Version 2 (hosted on Azure) offers complete data residency : prompts and responses do not leave the Azure infrastructure, with a zero-retention option available. Version 1 runs inference on Anthropic servers, even though billing transits through Azure.
Both versions include the following features :
- Azure Virtual Network integration to restrict network access at the resource level.
- Access control via Azure API keys or Entra ID with RBAC (Foundry User role required).
- Monitoring via Azure Monitor, logs in Azure Log Analytics, and cost tracking in Azure Cost Management.
For European organizations, the Sweden Central region is available in Global Standard (Version 1 and Version 2). The Data Zone Standard deployment (guaranteed residency within a geographic zone) is not available for Claude models in Europe. Global Standard routing may traverse Azure regions outside the EU.
Adaptive thinking and effort control
On Foundry, Claude Opus 5 supports only the adaptive and disabled thinking modes, the enabled mode (permanent extended thinking) is not available. In adaptive mode (default), the model self-adjusts its reasoning depth to the complexity of the request.
The effort parameter controls the quality versus cost trade-off :
- In adaptive mode : low, medium, high, xhigh, and max levels available.
- In disabled mode : effort capped at high.
The Fast mode (approximately 2.5 times faster, available on the direct Anthropic API as a research preview) is not available in Foundry.
Conclusion
The simultaneous availability of Claude Opus 5 in Foundry on launch day marks a step in the maturity of the Azure integration. Version 2 (hosted on Azure) meets the data residency requirements of organizations that cannot use the direct Anthropic API. For teams already deployed on Opus 4.8 in Foundry, migration to Opus 5 follows the same deployment process, with no change in pricing.
