Introduction
GPT-6 Astra joins the frontier models available in Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio, five days after its launch by OpenAI. The rollout began on September 4, 2026.

What Astra changes in Copilot
Microsoft’s main argument is about the size of the tasks that can be delegated. Rather than breaking a request into small, step-by-step guided pieces, Astra lets you hand off larger work to Copilot and refocus your own time on reviewing results, making decisions, and moving the work forward.
The quality of this delegated work depends as much on the model as on the context it can reason over. That’s the role of Work IQ : the feature grounds Astra’s responses in the tenant’s files, meetings, chats, and business data, within existing permissions.
What administrators need to know
The rollout is gradual and may vary by region and organization. Administrators manage access and configure Astra’s availability for their organization from the Microsoft 365 admin center.

Five days between OpenAI’s announcement and integration into Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio, the gap keeps narrowing with every new frontier model. For teams already using Fable 5.1 or Opus 5 in Copilot, Astra becomes a third point of comparison on long-running tasks, with Work IQ grounding as the one differentiator specific to the Microsoft integration.
