GPT-5.6 now available in Copilot

Introduction
On 9 July 2026, GPT-5.6 became the preferred model of Microsoft 365 Copilot, on the very day of its general availability at OpenAI. The preview of the range, restricted to around twenty validated partners, dated back to 26 June 2026 : three weeks were therefore enough to go from restricted access to an integration in the Microsoft 365 applications.

Where GPT-5.6 is available
The model is deployed across five Copilot surfaces :
- Word : Writing and reworking documents
- Excel : Data analysis and reasoning over workbooks
- PowerPoint : Generating and structuring presentations
- Copilot Chat : Conversations and search across tenant content
- Copilot Cowork : Long-running tasks and multi-step work
Microsoft and OpenAI present GPT-5.6 as a model jointly optimized for office work, not as a simple version replacement. The main argument concerns agentic reasoning, meaning the ability to chain several steps without going back to the user at every turn.
What changes in the applications
The announced gains differ from one application to another :
- Word : Turning raw ideas into more complete drafts, with a stronger structure and flow.
- Excel : Reasoning over more complex analyses, with less manual assembly between the request and the result.
- PowerPoint : Richer presentation drafts, better visual balance and more flexibility in styles.
These benefits remain vendor announcements, with no published measurement on Microsoft 365 tasks. The only figures available concern the evaluations of the GPT-5.6 range itself, not its behavior in Word or Excel.
What administrators need to know
The rollout is progressive per tenant. Once available, Copilot can select GPT-5.6 automatically when it considers it best suited to the request, and the user can choose it explicitly wherever a model selector exists.
On the governance side, the lever remains the same as for previous models. Administrators can disable a model or a model family from the Microsoft 365 admin center, in the Copilot settings. This is notably how the Anthropic family is disabled for an organization that does not wish to use it.

Conclusion
GPT-5.6 confirms a trend already visible with GPT-5.5 : the gap between an OpenAI launch and its availability in Microsoft 365 is now measured in hours rather than weeks. For administrators, there is nothing to enable, but two points deserve a check. First, the consistency between the models allowed in the tenant and the internal AI usage policy, since the selector now exposes several providers. Second, the fact that a change of default model alters Copilot’s behavior without any action on your part, which justifies monitoring the release notes.
