Email verification of external Teams participants

Email verification of external Teams participants

Introduction

Microsoft Teams Premium introduces a new feature to enhance the security and reliability of your meetings: email verification for external participants. This feature allows meeting organizers to require external participants to verify their email addresses before joining a meeting, providing a more secure and trustworthy environment.

Email verification feature

Meeting organizers can now request that external participants verify their email addresses using a verification code before joining the meeting. Once verified, participants will appear in the meeting with an “Email verified” label, giving organizers greater confidence in managing external participants.

Who is this feature for ?

When inviting external participants to join Teams meetings, it is common for them not to have a Microsoft work, school, or personal account. Currently, Teams allows users to join meetings as “unverified” participants. If your organization prefers not to allow unverified participants, this new feature will be beneficial. It enables participants to join the meeting by verifying their email without needing to create a Teams accoun

How to enable this feature

This feature is available to meeting organizers with a Teams Premium license. Administrators can manage this feature through a new meeting policy called Anonymous users can join a meeting after verifying by email code. Meeting organizers will also have a new option labeled Unverified participants can join the meeting which will be enabled by default if the administrator has allowed unverified participants.

Participant experience

When organizers choose to disallow unverified participants from joining meetings, participants will need to authenticate themselves upon attempting to join. If they have a Microsoft work, school, or personal account, they can use these credentials for authentication.

By allowing organizers to verify external participants, this feature provides greater assurance about who is joining your meetings.
