The 2026 edition was published on July 28, 2026.

Eight consecutive years in the lead

Microsoft has been named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for UCaaS solutions (Unified Communications as a Service), marking its 8th consecutive year in this position. Microsoft is positioned highest on the Ability to Execute axis and furthest on the Completeness of Vision axis, a recognition that confirms its ability to effectively execute while delivering a comprehensive vision for the future of unified communications.

Why this recognition ?

This distinction reflects a year of innovation on Microsoft Teams, designed to make the platform simpler, smarter and more secure, and to let humans and agents collaborate there. Copilot is at the center of this evolution :

  • Unified Copilot Chat : The Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat experience is now the same across chats, channels, meetings and calls, with a history shared with the other Copilot surfaces.
  • Work IQ : The intelligence layer that gives Copilot the context of the organization from Microsoft 365 data. Teams is a major source of it, since meetings, calls and chats hold the richest signals of collaborative work.

Simplifying communications

Teams Phone concentrates the new features aimed at exchanges with customers, partners and vendors :

  • Teams Phone Agent : Greets callers, resolves common requests on its own such as frequently asked questions or appointment scheduling, and routes the call with its full context to the right person. It also integrates with custom voice agents built in Microsoft Copilot Studio
  • Multi-line calling : Up to ten numbers assigned to a single user, each appearing as its own tab in the Calls app
  • Intelligent call delegation : Answers on the user’s behalf, determines the caller intent, filters spam and offers a follow-up through Microsoft Bookings when the person is unavailable
  • Unified call history : The Queues app provides a shared view of call activity, so that everyone knows which missed calls and voicemails have already been handled

Teams Phone Agent and intelligent call delegation are in public preview, reserved for customers of the Frontier program.

Smarter and more secure collaboration
  • Facilitator agent : Builds and tracks the agenda, answers questions and tracks tasks on behalf of everyone in the meeting
  • Audio and video recaps : The meeting recap can be consulted as a podcast-style narrated summary, for up to eight meetings, or as a video reel of the most important moments
  • New Teams events experience : Webinars and town halls brought together in a single flow, from preparation to post-event follow-up, with up to 100,000 concurrent attendees through Attendee Capacity Packs
  • Trust Indicators : Badges show the status of external people, external-familiar, external-unfamiliar, guest, email-verified or unverified
  • Meeting bot detection : Teams identifies bots in the lobby and flags them to the organizer before anyone is admitted
  • Brand impersonation detection : A warning is displayed when a call shows signs of impersonation, with the option to report it from the call history

AI at the heart of the workplace
  • Cloud IntelliFrame : Available on Windows and on certified Android devices, with individual gallery tiles for remote participants and multi-camera switching in larger rooms
  • Speaker recognition : Identifying individuals by name in live transcription now spans Windows and Android, which lets Copilot, intelligent recap and Facilitator credit in-room contributions to the right people. A dashboard shows admins who has already enrolled their profile
  • Microsoft Places : Desk booking from an interactive map, automatic reservation by plugging into a desk’s peripherals, room booking through Copilot, and full Microsoft Graph API support for buildings, floors, rooms and desks

Growing adoption

Microsoft backs this recognition with three usage figures :

  • 320 million : The number of people who use Teams every month
  • 26 million : The number of Teams Phone users with a license and an active phone number
  • 1.5 million : The number of Microsoft Teams Rooms licenses

Conclusion

This recognition from Gartner confirms that Microsoft isn’t just following trends, it’s creating them. Where the 2025 edition highlighted the first agents in meetings, the 2026 one brings them into telephony, security and meeting rooms. Combining AI, security, and simplicity, Teams is establishing itself as the go-to platform for organizations looking to modernize their communications and improve productivity. The future of unified communications will be intelligent, collaborative, and secure, and Microsoft is clearly leading this transformation.
